Proton Theatre's performance Evolution will be on the program of ARTE from middle of August till middle of November. Critics considered this production by Kornél Mundruczó to be the best of Ruhrtriennale in 2019. Moreover, some of the critics claimed it was the best production ever in the history of the biggest German cultural festival.
"Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó is one of the shooting stars of the present theatre and film scene. For the Ruhrtriennale 2019, in a performance entitled Evolution, he staged György Ligeti's Requiem. The piece, which deals with the Holocaust and remembrance, is divided into three acts, in which the music is played in different forms – live and in alienating formats like from the radio and TV.
Commissioned by the Ruhrtriennale, the Hungarian director and his company Proton Theatre created this gigantic production, only stageable at the world’s largest festivals. In the first and second parts, the stage-flooding deluge of water itself demands an immense space and a monumental set. Evolution portrays the effects of the Holocaust spanning three generations – the victim, her child and grandchild – with authentic psychological depth. Used like film music, György Ligeti’s Requiem grounds the piece, returning again and again. In the dark and highly-stylised first part, those cleaning out the gas chambers of the Holocaust discover an infant. In the second part, we are witnesses to a family drama that plays out in the living room of the already elderly survivor. Finally, in the third act, the immense space of the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, now outfitted with lasers, evokes a dystopian world linked to a network. The direction embraces three layers of time: the encounter with the terror of the past, the traumatized silence of the present, and the presumption of a future world in which artificial intelligence – in an apparently innocent way – leaves no room for either remembrance or remonstrance."
