The Double Bill
Music, sounds, noise, scenery, movements, action and stories... but no monologues, no discussions, also no text. All this in 2 shows on 1 evening. What the hell? These two theatre pieces are working together perfectly not solely because of their shared themes of building narratives through sound. They share braveness, delicate humour and a unique way of thinking about theatre making. The two pieces have been created together by a group of Hungary's prominent theatre makers, actors and technicians. Domestic Noise and Quad share a collective crew, creative thinking and energy which brings them together in one evening.
Eszter Kálmán: Domestic Noise
Domestic Noise is an innovative and amusing sound-based theatre piece created and performed by an artist couple. They tell about their marriage from everyday moments to life-changing decisions only through sound and noises created on stage with household objects. The audience can follow through their relationship ups and downs, conflicts and cooperation, grief and emotions we all can relate to. Exciting associations made through noises and soundscapes, which take audience members to their similar moments in their lives or imagine their possible future. It’s a moving and cunning theatre piece that not only challenges spectators to see through hearing, but to feel through hearing as well.
Eszter Kálmán is a set and costume designer, who regularly creates authentic productions dealing with the importance of theatrical elements. In this particular production sound and noise are in the focus point. With her husband, the actor-musician Zoltán Friedenthal, they go through their everyday life only with the help of sound. Besides the technical challenge of building a non verbal audio-narrative they let the audience into their world, giving a very intimate and entertaining performance on the visual side as well.
Tamás Matkó: Quad
Inspired by Samuel Beckett’s experimental play, Quad, this performance also works with sound on a different level. Quad is a fresh, unique, almost physical theatre piece which works with sound as a consequence of movement and action. Using visually strong images with an absurd sense of humor, it brings the audience to observe two headless figures walk through stage and trying to cook a meal without sight. Emphasising the notion of sound instead of sight, the performance shows the absurdity of being - through an irregular experience of the spectator.
Tamás Matkó is a composer-musician, working in theatrical productions. His interest now is the simple power of live sound made on stage by everyday actions such as cooking. The two headless figures’ movements, their rhythm and the sound of kitchen tools create the soundscape of the performance, filled with Beckett’s original sense of humor.
